How to Make Pillows from Outgrown Clothing

With the seasons changing, there are probably lots of outgrown clothing hanging out in the closets at the moment.  While it is amazing to donate your used items to those who really need it, sometimes kids have trouble parting with that one super special shirt or dress.  Not to worry, just make a fun pillow from it!

Once you've gathered your materials, these sweet little throw pillows take only a bit of time to make and will easily be a favorite item to adorn the bed.  If your kids are curious about the sewing machine, this is a perfect first sewing project!

Here's what you'll need:
  • Outgrown shirts, dresses, skirts, etc.  Is it worn looking?  Awesome!  That makes it even more snuggly and soft.
  • Stuffing (fiber-fill, fabric scraps, yarn scraps, etc)
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Sewing machine
Let's begin with a simple shirt, then we'll learn how to do a dress/skirt...

Begin by turning the garment inside out (step 2 in photo).  Sew along the bottom hem of the shirt (step 3 in photo), and along the bottom hem of each sleeve (step 4 in photo).  Turn the shirt right side out (step 5) and stuff the neck with stuffing (step 6 of photo).  Sew neck closed and you're finished!

How about a dress now?

For this dress, we just wanted to make a ruffle pillow, so I cut the top off the dress (we might do another pillow with this part later).  Turn inside out (step 2 in photo) and sew top closed (step 3 in photo).  Turn right side out.  Stuff with stuffing, then sew bottom closed too.  All finished...pretty!
